This volume brings to light, for the first time, a hitherto unpublished manuscript by Professor Ranajit Dasgupta (1930-1998), a leading historian of labour and working-class movements in India. His two major works-Society and Politics in Bengal: Jalpaiguri 1869-1947 (1992) and Labour and Working Class in Eastern India (1994) -are widely recognised by scholars interested in the socio-economic history of the region. Although the former examined the emergence and trajectory of the movement of the the tea workers in Jalpaiguri, Professor Dasgupta had also prepared a separate, fuller manuscript on the subject, which remained unpublished until now. Rooted in decades of rigorous research, this manuscript offers a detailed and analytically rich account of the movement in the Dooars. After his death, Professor Ajit Kumar Ray fortuitously discovered a significant archival document in the records of the Calcutta High Court, shedding new light on the movement and expanding the scope of original analysis. Edited and introduced by Professor Ray, this volume is an indispensable contribution to labour history, providing students, researchers, and discerning readers with a deeper understanding of the roots of resistance in colonial India.
