Down the Bhutan hills, the part of India with an average breadth of 30 kilometres and a length of 350 kilometres in West Bengal and Assam came to be known as Dooars. In this book attempts have been made to unfold the unknown past of Dooars which at least for historical studies have so far been neglected by our well-known historians of Kamrup as well as of Bengal. For the first time this book has argued that Dooars had not been a neglected dense forest or jungle area in the past; rather, it was the centre of flourishing culture and civilization. Dooars was the seat of the ancient Ratnapith of Kamrup; and afterwards it became the seat of the kingdom of Kamata and of the Koch Kingdom.

Sailen Debnath, the author, an ardent researcher and a prolific writer, during his long stay in Bhutan has had the access to the source materials of the History of Bhutan in Punakha Dzong; therein he came across of valuable references to the evolutionary facts of the history of Dooars; and he did not miss the opportunity of using those materials in reassessing the different aspects and in linking the facts of the history of Dooars.
